Panasonic TC-P46S2 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

I bought this television from Amazon & have lived with it for a couple of months.

I did a lot of shopping; finally deciding on this television & I am very happy I did. This TV is fantastic: Beautiful colors – 1080p – 600Hz Refresh Rate – 2,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio. The last two numbers make LCD’s come up very short. In case you don’t know: The contrast ratio is a measure of the difference between white and black. The higher the contrast ratio, the blacker the blacks & the whiter the whites. The deeper blacks make the colors really pop. This is where Plasma completely dominates LCD.

Sound & Vision Magazine rated these Panasonic Viera Plasma televisions right under the Pioneer Kuros. This is high praise considering that they had rated the Pioneers the best TV, of any kind – anywhere, for the last two years. Considering that the Kuros are 4 times the price, this TV was the obvious pick.

For the last years; the knocks against plasmas were the issues of Burn-In and excess heat compared to LCD’s. The issue of Burn-In has been addressed. It is not a problem anymore. In addition, I have not noticed the TV giving off any abnormal heat. As a matter of fact, I don’t notice any heat from it at all. Since these issues have been fixed, Plasma’s should be much higher on everyone’s shopping list.

A couple of side notes: 1) since I got it I have moved from cable to Dish. This has made a big improvement, & 2) the ability of take an SD card directly from the camera, insert it into the TV, and play the images is a nice feature.

I ordered direct from Amazon with the free shipping. The television arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The delivery people were accommodating and professional. They set everything up & were nice enough to even move some furniture around.

If you are considering a television in this price range, I think this is the one to get.

Panasonic TC-P46C2 46-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV User Review

The reviewer “Cass G” pretty much hit the nail on the head, this plasma tv is fantastic! This Panasonic TC-P46C2 has great black levels and color saturation. I will mainly focus on that in this review. The picture overall still deserves a 5/5. However, a friend of mine has the 42″ S2 series (1080p), and that set has even lower levels of black, plus a slight more vividness in the color (I was slightly jealous, I’m over it now).

This is because his version is a more refined panel than the C2 series plasmas. You can also step it up even further on the black reproduction by getting a G2 series or the 3D VT series tv’s. I’m emphasizing a lot on the black reproduction because I used to have a LG 42″ LCD, albeit awesome color accuracy, lacked true blacks that can add an irresistible layer of depth to anything on it. And after reading much on Panasonic’s awesome capability of delivering blacks so black that it’s almost scary, I had to snatch one up.

I also have a 22″ 1080p Insignia LED-LCD (for some Halo Reach multiplayer pwnage , and that, surprisingly, almost competes with this 46″ C2 series. Color on the Insignia is spot on compared to the Panny (see below). Nevertheless, the black levels are a shade darker on the Panny. Still the black levels and overall picture quality on the Insignia is unbelievably top-notch, you can’t beat that tv around the small-size.

The downsides to this 46″ C2 is that the green is mildly tinted fluorescent, meaning it looks neon. No matter how hard I tried to calibrate, it didn’t get rid of it. Red is not as affected as much by it, but it has just a tinge of it as well (this trait was also noticeable on the S2 series). The sound is very clear, achieving good separation with easily audible speech, though more headroom (volume) could be used here. No big deal, as if you bought a HDTV, you might as well get the other 50% of the experience and acquire HD sound.

Everything else is pretty much standard fare, for I just wanted to get the “meat” of the tv, which is it’s picture, out there. So for the price, around 6 benjamins, this 46″ window literally cannot be beat.

*I’m also very aware of the strange “lightening” or “rising” of the black levels on the upper-tier Panasonic plasma’s (generally speaking, the G20-25 series). I am hoping that this phenomenon doesn’t happen to this set, because that would be terrible that it would lose the very edge that gives this plasma series praise.

Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ85U 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

I’ve had this TV for over a year and I’m still blown away by the quality. Video quality is absolutely superb. Even the audio is on par or better than similar products. I use this for Blu-ray, PS3 gaming, external monitor for notebook, it works flawlessly for everything. I’m not going to go into all the Pros for this product, so many other reviews covered it all. The only Con that I have is that I didn’t buy two. I will continue to trust Panasonic for the best plasma TVs that you’ll find on the market.

Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ80U 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

I originally bought the TH-50PZ80U 50-Inch model but 3 days after I got it mounted on my wall I heard a loud pop sound, the picture went black and the red light started flashing a code on the front. Plasma TVs consume a huge amount of power – I think the 50 inch was running around 750 Watts. I did some research and discovered that the power supplies and internal power switching are extremely sensitive to power fluxuations. I had a surge protector in place, but that was not enough to save it. Ya need something like a Monster A/V Power Center / Filter (MP PRO 3500) or I just bought an industrial APC power filter rated for 800 Watts and only plugged my TV into it. I recommend this model: “APC BR1500LCD 1500VA 865 Watts 8 Outlets BACK-UPS” and make sure you plug your TV into the plug that says “surge & battery backup” and not “surge only” – ya gotta have a filter to give a clean 60hz 110VAC out to your TV because your power from the power company is “dirty” and that can damage your TV.

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P46S1 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

Pros:
Great feature set and PQ for the price. Fantastic size choice for a 10 foot viewing distance. This may not be as important to others, but this TV runs VERY cool. I bought it for a medium to small bedroom and in the last five years I have used a 32″ CRT, a 37″ LCD, and lastly a 42″ DLP before this. Each of these TV’s has made a pretty big difference in how warm the bedroom is in summer. This is the coolest running set I’ve ever seen or even heard of.
This TV does ‘push’ green a bit just as others have reported but a couple of ticks of adjustment does the trick for me. As soon as it has been used a month or two I’ll run an AVIA calibration on it. I also have a 50″ PZ85U Panasonic in the living room. We really love this set!
The speakers are small and down firing but are OK for late night quiet viewing, but most people will bypass these for a surround system. I just purchased a receiver with Audessey sound leveling and the difference is incredible if only just for the pleasure of NOT having my local stations cut in thier advertisers over the network feed and blow my hair back with the volume difference. I can’t be the only on that gets annoyed by that. The oversaturation is so bad on some of the local commercials in the DFW area that the stock TV speakers actually had what sounded like cone breakup without being overdriven at all. It’s like having some annoying ass in your house, monkeying around with the volume control.

Cons:
None really but could really use a dedicated sleep timer button on the remote. Also, does not help me pick winning lotto numbers.

Panasonic VIERA U1 Series TC-P46U1 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

The arrival (just a few days after ordering it online) was exciting! Delivery men carried the big box into the house, opened it, took the big set (46 inch screen) out and plugged it in to check if it worked. It DID! They left, and I got busy reading the big manual that described the installation and hook-up. My wife and I could lift the big set, and I followed the diagrams in the book, attaching our other Panasonic gear, the disc player and tape players, and home theatre speakers. We turned it on, and it worked! We’ve never seen such a terrific picture, sound and picture control! We have MANY classic tapes and discs, collected over the years, and we watch opera, and classical music presentations often. The Panasonic Viera 46 inch set is a marvelous addition to our home!
