Panasonic Viera TH-50PX80U 50-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV User Review

We purchased this set in Oct 2008 at our local Best Buy (incidentally at the 9 price that Amazon has today in 2009) and are very happy with it. Picture is fantastic, controls easy to use. Our cable company switched our HD cable box from a component output to HDMI, and man, did the picture get even better.

We also use an Apple TV connected to this television via HDMI, that looks great as well. Great fun to surf YouTube right on the TV, and the quality is actually pretty decent. We’ve rented and purchased HD movies on the Apple TV and they look fantastic as well.

Even though it is only 720p the picture looks great for my aging eyes, and we use it in a large living room seated at least 8 feet back. I’m not sure we could tell a difference between 720p and 1080p anyway. Great way to save a few bucks.

There is an optical audio output, so you can send the audio from your HDMI sources out to your receiver as well. We don’t use the speakers on the TV, we run everything through our Onkyo, which also sounds great.

The main cons:

This set is light on inputs; only 2 component inputs on the back, 2 HDMI inputs on the back, and one HDMI on the front. With more and more gear using HDMI you might have to snake a cable to the front and leave the little door open. Minor inconvenience, as we don’t have ours wall-mounted.

Also, this thing is rated for almost 500 watts of power when it’s on. I did notice our power bill went up a little bit when we switched from our 19″ tube to this monster. But the picture is great and worth the power premium. (I prefer plasma over LCD)

By the way, this is our only TV, and we’re glad we picked this model.

Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P50G10 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

This unit weighs roughly 75 pounds, and it comes unattached to its base. Installing it requires two strong men who know what they are doing even when it is to be placed on a table or TV stand-the TV must be lifted onto the base and then screwed to it. Hanging it on a wall would probably require three men.

The Panasonic tech people demonstrated no interest in helping me connect this device to another product called TV Ears which broadcasts to a set of headphones. TV Ears requires an “audio out” socket which the Panasonic lacks. I tried all of the audio sockets on the Panasonic, and none worked.

The picture quality is excellent although initially our Charter Cable installer attached the Panasonic to the set top box with RCA cables. The result is what appears to be a 720p image. This unit (and undoubtedly all 1080p sets) requires an HDMI cable. This information is provided in passing with no particular emphasis in the poorly written Panasonic manual.

Overall, getting this unit to work with the other components in our system has taken weeks of effort, roughly a dozen e-mails, and multiple trips to local stores. If I knew when I bought it how irritating and expensive the process would be, I would have waited for my ordinary television to wear out.

Panasonic TH-50PX75U 50-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV User Review

I have had 2 Panasonic Plasma TV’s and I can’t be happier with them. One of them just quit on me this week, and so I went to shop around. The basic reason is that we lived for three years on the beachfront and the sea breeze got to it. So I went out shopping for another TV. Looked at LCD and Plasma, but LCD have been having more technical problems lately, also their level of black is never quite the same, plus there are serious issues when watching sports or any film with a great deal of action. Thus I ended going back to a Plasma. Was about to purchase a Full HD from Samsung, but found its image quality worse than my old Panasonic. So I went back and purchased another Panasonic, equivalent model to my older one, only difference was the price, about 25% of the price of my first plasma. Thought about purchasing a Panasonic Full HD, but since I watch Full HD films on my Panasonic Projector, and this TV will be in the basement I went with 768p.

Panasonic TH-50PZ850U 50-inch Viera 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

I have had the Panasonic TH-50PZ850U for about 6 months. I spent about 00 with extended warranty. So far, I have been impressed. The resolution was top notch. I used “Finding Nemo” to test the colors. On the vivid setting it was fantastic… Probably a bit exaggerated. The Studio ref mode offers more accurate colors. The THX settings on the 800U may be more accurate, but I would love to have a little bit of oomph to the colors even if it is not accurate. Don’t we all like “exaggerated fake ones”!
Clearly this TV is a winner. It comes close to the blacks in a pioneer and the THX accuracy of the 800U. It matches the Brilliant colors of a Samsung or probably even better. It has improved energy savings, better anti glare screen, wider viewing angle, and a web interface via viera cast. I am going to set up the viera cast soon. I cannot find another TV that packs more.
The speakers are great. I moved to a smaller home and had to keep the surround speakers in storage, but I don’t feel the need for them.
It is easy to assemble and set up. You won’t need a professional. I bought an upconverting DVD player to watch all my old DVDs and the difference is obvious. I am yet to watch Blu-ray movies. I am waiting for a good blu ray player that can also play movies stored on an external hard drive through a USB connection.
Like others have mentioned, the only bug – if a player is connected through a HDMI port it will switch out another that is connected via component cables.

Panasonic TH-50PH10UKA 50-Inch Dual HDMI Plasma HDTV User Review

Panasonic has cured the only issue with this professional model, and that was the shortage of HDMI ports….the 10UK model had one (1), this model has two (2), and the new HDMI add-on modules have 2 ports now so you can easily upgrade this unit to 4 HDMI ports which is more than most people will ever need…I think!

This 50″ 720p/1080i plasma panel is rated #1 by Consumer Reports, and is far superior to its closest competition which is Pioneer and Samsung. Right now this TV is a bargoon for people who plan to use a satellite tuner or cable box/DVR, and you will find the Split Screen/PIP feature to be a great option that is not included in Panasonic’s 58PZ700U/1080p model for twice the money so thats a nice bonus.

Now a word about 720p vs. 1080p…. no argument here that 1080p is technically superior, but if you research the difference in these two formats you will find there is an “optimal” distance from the TV that allows you to enjoy and actually see the benefits of the 1080p picture. For a 58″ plasma, the THX recommended distance is …..drum roll please…..5.5 feet! Other distance calculators you find on the web will put the optimal viewing distance for 1080p at 6.5 feet, and the max distance at 9′. Before you spend the extra money on a 1080p set you may want to check your living space to make sure your room will allow you to sit close enough to take advantage of the extra resolution provided by the new 1080p format.

Another thing to consider is this…. right now cable/satellite HD programming is delivered in stunning 1080i. If you’ve seen these broadcast signals in your own home then you already know they are spectacular. The likelihood of future 1080p broadcasts is very slim, too many technical hurdles to clear relative to bandwidth and this would also require the cameras at source to be upgraded so the obstacles are many. I seriously doubt you’ll see any change in the current format for another 10 years at least so that leaves us with the only 1080p medium today, other than video game platforms being BluRay discs, which are double the price of standard DVDs which can be upconverted rather inexpensively to 720p/1080i. So, there are a lot of considerations on where best to spend your money. Personally, I opted to buy this 58″ plasma for all the reasons above, and I don’t need the stand or tuner so it was sort of a no brainer. Plus, I already own two Panasonics, one being the 42″ Professional model so I know what I can expect. And those of you worried about reliability….don’t. Panasonic has the best record of service and reliability in the business, and my first 42″ model has been in continuous service for 4 years without missing a beat, and the picture is still just as crisp without a hint of burn-in.

One more note… if you’re not using a home theater setup and don’t plan to mount this tv on the wall, you will need the optional speakers and stand. If you are a smart shopper you can find them at reasonable prices on the web.

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P50S1 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

Highly recommend this tv for a low-price, high-picture-quality tv. For the price, I cannot complain; however, if I had to say, the bad thing about this tv is that the picture isn’t adjustable enough. In the settings menu, there are options that are grayed out, which is extremely annoying because as far as I know they just disabled the settings to try to get people to spend more to get the G10 series tv. I don’t know how these things work exactly, so maybe it was a measure taken to cut costs and keep the price lower, but I don’t see why they would include the options in the menu just to gray them out.
Besides that, no grief at all with this tv. I’m pretty happy that it’s also relatively energy efficient for a plasma tv.

Panasonic PT-50LC13 50-Inch TheaterWide HDTV-Ready Projection LCD TV User Review

Contrary to what some of the others have said in this forum, I’ve had this tv for 5 years and never (thats right) had any problems with it. I’ve moved it 3 times and never have I had an issue. The HDTV looks amazing, The gaming looks unreal. The response time is lightning fast. I love this tv and plan on keeping it for years to come. I still use it in the increasingly fast tv market. after 5 years the only thing I wish it had was a HDMI hook up. The DVI, however looks just about as good. Great TV.

Like any forum, only the dissatisfied customers usually write reviews. I’m here to voice the other side…for all the happy customers that will not review.
