Panasonic TH-58PX60U 58-Inch Plasma HDTV User Review

I researched dozens of tv’s over the last few weeks and it is very difficult to determine in a store and online which tv has the best picture. Although money was a consideration my primary interest was screen size and quality of the picture. I primarily watch sports such as football, basketball and golf however we do like to watch our shows such as Lost, Heroes, etc… You know… the good ones that are in HD…

Anyways, I was seriously looking at the 61″ Samsung DLP and the Mitsubishi 57″ DLP because you get more screen size for the buck and they are 1080P. My thought was that 1080P is the future and so I want to future proof my setup. Unfortunately 1080P plasma’s were way to out of reach for my budget. I wasn’t considering plasma’s at first because I wasn’t about to buy a 1080i/720p model however, I came across this model TH-58PX60U at Costco for 00.00.

How I made my decision was based on the refresh rates of action sports which I’ve concluded that Plasma is the only way to go…In stores, the DLP’s seem pixelated and the screen couldn’t keep up with the motion. I think if electronic stores want to sell more DLP tv’s…they need to enhance their signal.

I did buy an HDMI cable (rocketfish 4′ for ) for my Verizon FiOS HD DVR and hooked it up and I could tell a slight difference in quality vs. the component video feed. Now that I have it setup the picture is amazing. Here is what I tested:

I tested late night drama’s and the picture is super clear. I did get some football clips on ESPN sportcenter and the picture and clarity was exactly what I was hoping for. I started watching non HD broadcast and the picture is good…I was watching the Golf Channel and even though it is not broadcast in HD, the picture is very good. I am excited to see what it looks like on HD over the weekend.

The price to value ratio for this particular tv is awesome! I am a little concerned still that I didn’t buy the 1080P but it is way to expensive to keep up with technology. 2 Years ago this TV was over 5K and now it is less than half that. In the stores, I couldn’t tell the difference between 1080P and 1080i/720P and although I am taking somewhat of a risk by going with the 1080i/720p I should be good to go for the next 5-7 years before I buy again. Besides, broadcast TV is only 1080i/720p and since that is what I predominately watch a 1080P TV isn’t going to do me much good. Of course Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are out however, now that I blew my wad on this TV…it’s going to be a while before I can get one of those…not too mention that they are going to have to come down in price to about 0-250 before I would consider them. I did test my DVD player and it was ok…We watched ‘Cars’ and there were absolutely no artifacts from the speed of the picture. It was clear and overall, I’m very happy.

58″ Plasma for less than 2500 bucks…Wow! you can not go wrong…especially from Panasonic and their quality products that they put out…I would recommend this set to anyone.

Another reason to buy from Costco is they extend the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional year so you get 2 years for the price of one. And if you pick it up…not that heavy and the box is easy to manuveur because someone got smart and put handles in the box although you will need a truck…

Anyways, hope this helps!

Panasonic Viera TH-58PZ850U 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

So much has already been said about this amazing Plasma so I won’t waste words here. After months of research this loyal Sony owner jumped ship. After side by side comparisons and reading countless reviews I determined that the Viera blew the Sony XBR away. The Kuros by Pioneer has priced itself out of the competition for my wallet and to be honest I think you are splitting hairs between the Viera and the Kuros. My dilemna was in choosing between the 58 Inch Viera 800 or the flagship 850U. The lesser priced 800 is the only model of the two that gets the THX certification on it’s picture and is priced around 0.00 less. The 850U has the firmware and ethernet connection so that it’s capabilities are upgradeable. It currrently has the ability to view your Picasa photo’s,watch YouTube videos, and a few other neat things like the one click concierge service for any problems the TV should have as well as world weather. The Vera Link option works seamlessly with my Panasonic 55 Blu-Ray player. I was able to have the best of both worlds. Although Abes of Maine consistantly had the 800 at he best price around. I was able to buy a refurbished 850U that comes with the 90 day warranty from Panasonic.I paid 99.00 and I am so happy I did. This TV is in perfect condition and they pack it like it’s the last one on earth. I bought from Just like New Electronics in case you are looking. I’m amazed at this Picture and all the bells ans whistles the TV has. It’s has th whole family under it’s hypnotic spell.I wanted the cleanest look I could get and replaced my old surround sound system with a Yamaha YSP4000 sound bar. I have no regrets on any of it.By buying the 850U I’m able to stay up to date with all the new ways Panasonic can think of to keep me connected to the world. I love the fact that it has begun to replace my small PC screen and Laptop with 58 inches of mind blowing views. If you can swing it I would not hesitate to buy the 850U. I don’t think the lack of THX certification means anything other than Panasonic not wanting to pay the extra money for the Certification in an effort to keep it way under the Kuros.

Panasonic TH-58PZ700U 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

This is our second plasma monitor. Our first was a Pioneer, years ago, and made me wonder what the big hoopla over HD was about. This monitor helped me to understand! The picture is so sharp, even with non-HD programming. HD images are sharp with clear colors and flawless contrast. The black tones are true, without any greenness or inkiness (both problems with our old Pioneer). My favorite part about it is that I sometimes can’t even tell that what I’m watching isn’t in HD. It just makes everything look great.

I should add, though, that you need to take the time to set up the color saturation, brightness and contrast. When we first plugged it in and turned it on, the image was awful. My first thought was that all HD monitors were crap and that it was just a fad. But once my husband worked out the kinks in the image, I was sold. I could tell the difference the first time I saw it, before he even told me. So take the time to get to know your TV and learn how to make it work for you (or get someone that will do it for you) and you’ll be thrilled!

And finally, you don’t want it too close to your face. When we first got this monitor, we had a smaller set up for our living room. The screen was only about 8 feet from the couch. This was fine for our smaller screen, but with this one it made all the pixels way too obvious. Then we moved to a new place and the screen is about 12 feet from the couch. At first it’s weird to be so far away from the TV, but it’s just what was needed. Bigger may be better, but you need to have the proper distance. If you’re closer than 10 feet to your TV stand, then be sure to get a smaller monitor.
